**************************************** "History of Transportation Bonded Passengers to America": Peter Wilson Coldham. Vol I, II & III Genealogical Publishing Co. Inc. 1983; Baltimore S means sentenced by Assize Court T means transported with ship & date London: NUN als Powell, James S July T Aug 1721 Prince Royal Landing Certificate VA 1721 HURST, Christian S July T August 1721 Prince Royal Landing Certificate VA Nov 1721 In 1718 Jonathan Forward got a 24 year monopoly as contractor and shipped 400 felons to Virginia and Maryland to be sold there. The 1718 act allowed using contractors to transport felons to serve 8 years, each transported in handcuffs and feet irons. They were sent to all colonies but Jamaica and the West Indies. The Nunn/Hurst coincidence caused me to look at their trials. I had hoped there might be a joint crime which would indicate a friendship which might have continued in Virginia; thus a possible explanation of the two families intermarriages. To my surprise, Christian Hurst was a woman. Their crimes seemed to be unconnected. It is improbable, but possible that Christian did have a son born who would be named Hurst; perhaps she lived with or married James Nun alias Powell, providing Nun children who would be close to the Hurst child. It is an interesting coincidence, anyway. Whether there is any significance in her Landing Certificate being dated Nov. and no date for his. Old Bailey Proceedings (Guild Hall Library, London). Wed., Thurs., Fri., & Sat.- 7th, 8th, 9th, & 10th of December 1720 James Nunn alias Powel was indicted for stealing a letter case value 10 shillings on the 3th of Oct. last to which indictment he pleaded guilty. Transportation. (His sentence.) Wed., Thurs., Fri., Sat. 1st, 2nd, 3d, 4th March 1720 Jury of Matrons found Christian Hurst with quick child were---------to next session on Wed. 19th of April (part is missing so I cannot tell if Christian was one of those to be held at the next session.A number 6 was written on the page by the library) Elizabeth Lockwood alias Logwood & Christian Hurst of St. Giles without Cripplegate were indicted for stealing a silver watch, chain, and seal on the 16th of Feb. last. The prosecutor deposed, that as he was going along Red-Cros Street he met with the prisoner Hurst, who desired him to hand her over the Kennel, which he did to Logwood's house; where Hurst pict his Pocket of his watch, and gave it to a man who was there: that he hearing a Noise of other men below Stairs was afraid they might murder him if he made many Words; so went away: But being asked said that he did not see Logwood that night but was advised to take her up as Landlady; that they both consent when in custody that they had pawned it for a quinea which if he would advance he should have it again. Two other Evidences deposed, that they heard them confes as before, and that Hurst took it out of his pocket and gave it to another Man; that they live in Hand Alley in Golden Lane, and that it is an ill House. The Evidence not being sufficient against Logwood, the Jury Acquitted her, and found Christian Hurst Guilty of the Indictment. Death (Her sentence). (Obviously, she was transported instead; presumably because she was pregnant. If these women did have children, what became of them? Were they put in some sort of orphanage, sent with the mothers in transportation?) **************************
