GEORGE HENRY HURST
George Henry Hurst was born on Jan 26,1855 in Leckhampstead, Buckingamshire,
son of Isaac Hurst of Leckhampstead & Elizabeth Mansell of Hillesdon,
Bucks
the seventh child of nine.
He married Elizabeth Ann Brown in Paulerspury, Northamptonshire on the
7th
of Aug 1876. He was 21, she was 19.
Their first two children, Fred & Clara Ellen, were born in Leckhampstead
in 1877 & 1878.
Their third child, Charles was born in 1880 in Paulerspury, his mother's
village.
Their fourth child, John, was born in Gnossall, Staffordshire (as were
the rest of their
thirteen children) in 1882.
George was 27 when he made the move to Gnossall. Baptismal records from
1882-1895
indicate that George & Elizabeth lived at the Hollies, Gnossall Heath
& Dooley in that
time period; George's occupation was given as labourer, agricultural engineer,
then
engine driver. The 1881 census lists his occupation as an engine maintainer
& his place
of residence as Wealer Bldg, Hamlet of Church Aston, Rural District of
Newport,
Church District of St Andrews, County of Staffordshire.
Elizabeth & George had 13 living children altogether, although my Grandmother,
Lily Hurst, said that her mother died in childbirth.
Sometime between 1898 (the birth of their youngest child, Beatrice)
& 1905 (dates on family postcards) they moved to St Anne's-on-Sea,
Lancs.
(George being aged 43 to 50). They lived on St David's Rd & George
worked at the
electric company on St David's Rd.
Elizabeth died in the 4th Qtr 1904.
At Lily's Wedding, Mar 1914, George Henry's occupation was given as engineer.
In 1905 George married Martha Smith, a widow with several children.

1. FRED (1877-1948)
Fred stayed in Staffordshire; he married Annie; he worked at an Electrical
company.
Fred & Annie had one child, Fred. The elder Fred died in 1948.
Young Fred was a solicitors' clerk. He married Mabel on the 15th of
Aug 1935.
They had one daughter, Winnie.
I think Winnie died in her 20s.

2. CLARA (1878-1949)
Clara married Alfred Cooper in 1898 in Staffordshire. They had no
children but looked after Evelyn (d of sister Lizzie & George Knowles)
for a time.
On 10 Dec 1905 they were living at 202 St David's Rd, St Anne's
and on 06 Sep 1906 the address was 208.
From Apr 1907 to Dec 1907 they lived at Churchview, Coppenhall,
near Stafford & George Knowles was trying to persuade them to come
to Oldham (ref postcard 10 Sep 07).
On 04 Apr 1912 they were living with/visiting? Mrs. Emerton, Crewe
who was George Henry's sister, Elizabeth.
At sometime Clara & Fred ran the Laundry on Brook St, Oldham.
By 27 Jan 1916 they were living at 189 Picton St., Hamilton
Fred died 22 Sep 1943 in Hamilton. Clara married Harry Moss; she died
16 Feb 1949.
Fred had a sister called Annie

3. CHARLES (1880 - ?)
Charlie worked in a steel company in Sheffield then moved to Blackpool.
His wife was called Minetta. They had no children. Charlie was alive
in 1948 as I remember my Grandmother taking me to visit him in
Blackpool before we left for Canada.

4. JOHN ISAAC (1882-1960)
John married Ellen (Nel) (b 1885)
They had two children, Elizabeth Ann b 1908 & John (Cyril) b 24 Sep
1909.
John & Nell lived at Holding 52, Yarlett, nr Stafford, Staffs.
They were still in England in 1929 (picture of Cyril with date). At sometime
after
that date they moved to Canada where they farmed in Ancaster, Ont. There
were
many family picnics held at their farm.
Nell died 24 Jun 1955 & Jack died 11 Aug 1960. The farm was sold and
is now part of a subdivision in Ancaster.
i. Elizabeth Ann (Betty)
Betty was born in 1908; she married Joseph Charles Corcoran; they were
divorced.
Betty had 2 children Mary & Peter. Betty died in 1952 aged 44
from cancer. She is
buried in the churchyard in Ancaster.
Mary married Michael Werner in 1950 & their 1st child, Katherine Elizabeth
was born
19 Sep 1952. they have 3 other children - Michele, Dennis & Donald.
Peter is now out West
ii. John (Cyril)
Cyril was born 24 Sep 1909; he was legally blind. He never married.
Cyril died 08 Jan 1988 in Hamilton, Ontario.

5. ELIZABETH ANN (1885-1954)
On 13 Jun 1906 Lizzie was living or visiting 208 St David's Rd,
St Anne's - on - sea. On 5 Sep 1906 she was not married (Post card)
Lizzie worked at the Bluecoat school in Oldham and met George there
On 06 Sep 1906 George was working in Oldham & was not married to Lizzie
yet.
On 25 Aug 1907 George was still in Oldham & married to Lizzie.
Lizzie & George were the first of the family in Oldham ? but separately,
not married.
They ran the laundry on Brook St after Clara & Fred.
George & Lizzie were in Canada before Fred & Clara, in fact
George went over there on his own at first. At one time he was
a Machinist at Brown Boggs, Hamilton. He also ran as a communist
candidate in municipal elections in Hamilton.
In Apr 1912 they lived at 18 Keith St, Hamilton.
George & Lizzie had 2 daughters, Evelyn & May.
By Nov 1948 they were living at 140 Paling Avenue.
Lizzie died in 1954 & George in 1957.
i. Evelyn
Evelyn was born 02 Jan 1908 in Oldham & her godparents were George
Henry Hurst
& Clara E Cooper (her Aunt & Uncle). Evelyn married Louden (Tommy)
Hardie
on 15 Sep 1936 in Hamilton.
They had 2 children Kenneth & Elizabeth Clara. Tommy died 08 Feb 1971;
Evelyn died 12 Sep 1996.
ii. May
May was born 02 May 1911. She married Norman Allerton. They had 2 children,
Joan & Norman Jr.
May died 04 Oct 1973.

6. FRANCES MARY (1886-1940)
Fan was born in Feb 1886 in Gnossall. She married Harry Emerton, her
cousin.(Harry's
mother Elizabeth was Fan's father's sister). Harry was a Grenadier Guardsman
in WWI
Fan worked in the laundry before owning it; she owned the laundry when
Evelyn
Cottam was born in 1920; then Harry & Fan moved to 19 Mt Pleasant St
a house which
was owned by Jane Birkenshaw (the aunt of Lily's husband, Arthur).
At different times they owned a news agents in Manchester, a shop in St
David's Rd,
St Anne's, & a garage in Waterhead across from their house. Fan was
illiterate but
numerate.
Fan died 22 Apr 1940 and was buried in Waterhead Church in Oldham.
They had no children.
An interesting side note is that Jill Parsons (Lily Hurst's granddaughter)
& her husband
Alan Senior lived in the same house in Waterhead that Harry Emerton had
once occupied
in the 1940's.

7. GEORGE HENRY HURST (1887 - ?)
George Henry was born 30 May 1887 in Gnossall. According to my
grandmother he left England because he got a girl pregnant. He
moved to Canada before WWI. On 26 Sep, 1914 he joined the Canadian Expeditionary
Forces his trade was listed as mechanic. His addresswas 100 Burton St &
he was
married at that time to Hannah Blount with one child, Eleanor.
After the war he started selling door to door; he soon had a music
store on Kenilworth Avenue. At some time the store moved to Ottawa
Street and became a furniture store. In 1948 it was quite a large store
employing
mostly family members. George set up 2 of his sons-in-law in business in
Burlington.
He was rumoured to be a millionaire.
George & Hannah had 3 children: Eleanor Frances, Ailsie Mae & Jeanne.
i. Eleanor
Eleanor was born 15 Feb 1913 in Hamilton. She married Jack Swarbrick
on 12 Jun 1942. They had 2 children Kathleen Frances (who only lived a
day) & Patricia Ann. Eleanor died in Sep 1970 and Jack 12 Jan 1996.
ii. Ailsie May
Ailsie May was born 16 Apr 1920 in Hamilton. She married Alexander
Overton Forrest on 12 Jun 1943. They had 2 children Kathleen
Eleanor & George Stephen Henry. Alex died 04 Oct 1978.
Jeanne was born 22 Dec 1927 in Hamilton. She married Lloyd Field 21
May 1955. They adopted 4 children: George Michael, Patrick Henry,
David Lloyd & Andrea Jeanne.
Lloyd died Sep 1995.

8. ALFRED (1888 - ? )
Alfred was born 02 Nov 1888 in Gnossall. He started out on the railway
cleaning
carriages and finished as a train driver. He married Marretta Stephenson
in Colne, Lancs.
On 09 May 1910 they lived at Knotts Lane,
Colne. They had 2 children George Alfred & Fred. Alfred & Marretta
lived at Rose Grove where he had an allotment.
i. George
George Alfred was born 21 July 1909 in Colne. He married Edith
Blackburn. They had 1 child, Alfred. George died in 1962 & Edith
on the 22nd of Jun 1975.
ii Fred
Fred was a bit of a ne'er do well; he married Lena; they adopted a girl.

9. WILLIAM THOMAS HURST (1891- 1960)
Billy was born 21 May 1891 in Gnosall. He was a chauffeur.
On 13 Jan 1909 he lived at 16 St Stephen's St, Oldham. He
wasn't married to Emma then ( was she working at the Laundry? Post Card
mentions Brooks St.)
By May 1912 he was married to Emma Sturgess & their first child,
Marion was born. On 10 Apr 1914 Billy was going to Toronto & on
30 Jul 1914 was still there. I surmise Emma was with him as
Phyllis was born 18 Aug 1914 at 7 Thames St. Oldham. They had 3
more children: Bertram Victor, Vera & Edith. Billy died 25 Oct 1960.
i. Marion
Marion was born 28 May 1912; she married Seville Stott & they had
one child, Jaqueline.
ii Phyllis
Phyllis was born 18 Aug 1914. She married Robert Butterworth 11 May
1936;
they had one child Margaret. Bob died 03 Oct 1987.
iii. Bertram Victor
Bertram Victor was born 20 Aug 1916 at Thames St, Oldham. He was named
after Billy's youngest brother. He married Anne Manning 28 Nov 1936.
They had 4 children: George Bertram Francis, Gerard, Kevin Anthony &
Mary
Monica.(who was adopted ) Annie died in 1993 & Bert died 06 Sep 1997.
iv. Vera
Vera was born 02 Oct 1924; she married Geoffrey Holt. They had 4 children:
Leslie,
Phillip, Christine & Ian.
v. Edith
Edith was born in 1926 & died of meningitis in 1937.

10. LILY(1892-1980)
Lily was born 14 Aug 1892 in Gnosall. She moved with her family to
St Anne's on Sea. She left home & went into service in 1906 because
she didn't get along with her stepmother, Martha. At some time she
helped out in the laundry & also helped raise Evelyn & May Knowles
(Lizzie's children)
Lily married Arthur Parsons 28 Mar 1914 in St James Church. Oldham by licence;
he was 26, she was 21. Both of them were living at 24 Brook St. Witnesses
were
Harry Gartside & Polly Green who later married. Lily was pregnant with
her first child,
Stanley, who was born 31 Aug 1914 & died Feb 1915. When first married
they lived
on Ball St; when Stanley died they were living at 74 Bale St.
Leslie was born 04 Apr 1916 & Kenneth 13 Jun 1924. Arthur worked for
the Birkenshaws who were his relation on his mother's side & who owned
a plumbing & decorating shop. Arthur & Lily lived at 19 Mount Pleasant
Street & also 26 Mount Pleasant in houses owned by the Birkenshaws.
Arthur died in 1949. Lily traveled back & forth to Canada several times
after Arthur's death & finally settled there in 1954. When her sister
Lizzie died, Lily married her sister's husband George Knowles.
Lily died 26 Mar 1980, was cremated & her ashes scattered over Lizzie's
grave.
i. Leslie
Leslie was born 04 Apr 1916 & married Gladys Buswell 29 July 1939.
They had 1 child, June. Gladys died 06 Feb 1988.
ii. Kenneth
Kenneth was born 13 June 1924; he married Una Green 26 July 1951.
They have 3 children: Jill, James & Jonathan.

11. WALTER (1895-1941)
Walter was born in Jun 1895 in Gnosall. He had a fall when a baby;
had one leg shorter than the other and had "water on the brain".
He
lived with Lily for a time & died of cancer at Boundary Park Hospital,
Oldham.
He did not marry

12. BERTRAM VICTOR (1897 - 1918)
Bert was born Aug 1897 in Gnosall. He enlisted in the 1st Batt., Loyal
North Lancashire Regiment; he was killed 01 July 1918 at the Battle of
the Somme in WWI just before his 19th birthday. He is buried in The Maroc
British Cemetery, Grenay, France. The family story is that he was
underage when he enlisted & the family had got his release but he
died before they could get him back to England. There exist postcards
& letters, which Bert sent from the front to his sister Lil & his
cousin Lil Copeland. One is dated 25 Jan 1916 the other 20 Feb 1916.

13.BEATRICE ANN (1898 - 1953)
Beat was born in 1898 in Gnosall. She married Dick Cottam. They had
one child, Evelyn born 19 Mar 1920 while they were living on Smith Street,
Oldham.
Dick & Beat were the last to own the laundry on Brook St. They
owned a chippie in Manchester, a confectionery in Glodwick, sold it
then managed it & then back to the chippie ; Dick rode a motorbike;
he died around 1946
i. Evelyn
Evelyn was born 19 Mar 1920; she married someone called Dawkins;
they had one daughter, Mavis born 06 Jul 1943. Evelyn left Dawkins
for Jack White. Evelyn & Jack had 4 children: Ian, Jean, Barbara &
Marilyn.
