B, 2 (Ashby’s) Tennessee Cavalry 18 April 1900 Soldier’s Application for Pension I, Eldridge Hurst a native of the State of Tennessee and now a citizen of Tennessee, resident at Acriff in the County of Union in said State of Tennessee, and who was a soldier from the State of Tennessee, in the war between the United States and the Confederate States, do hereby apply for aid under the Act of the General Assembly of Tennessee entitled "An Act for the benefit of the indigent and disabled soldiers of the late war between the States and to fix the fees of attorneys or agents for procuring such pensions and fixing a penalty for the violation of the same." And I do solemnly swear that while in the discharge of my duty in the service of the Confederate States, of Answer: [blank] I was wounded in the battle or battles of Answer. [blank] and from the effects of such wound or wounds I was disabled as follows Answer. [blank] and by reason of such wound and disability I am entitled to receive the benefits of this Act. I further swear that I do not hold any National, State of County office, nor do I receive aid or a pension from any other State, or from the United States, and that I am not an inmate of any solders’ home, and that I am unable to earn a reasonable support for myself and family. I was taken sick on the road to fishing Creek Kentucky With a pain in my Left side Cased from Exposure. What was the precise nature of your wound or wounds. Answer. Not wounded. What limb, if any, did you lose by reason of such wounds, or wounds, and , if no limb, state fully the disability caused by wound, or wounds, and is said disability permanent? Answer. I did not loose any limb. My Disease is permanent. Were you incapacitated for service by reason of said wound, wounds, or service? Answer. I was. Were you discharged from the army by reason of said wound, wounds, or service? Answer. I was. If discharged from the army, where were you and what did you do until the close of the war? Answer. at Knoxville Tennessee. Worked on the farm as best I could. How did you get out of the army? Discharged at Knoxville. Did you take the oath of allegiance to the United State Government? Answer. I did. If so, when, and under what circumstances? Answer. In November 1863 to Keep from being sent to prison. Are you married, or have you been married? Answer. I am living with my second wife. If so, what is the size of your family? Answer. Myself & Wife. Two children married live to themselves. What are the respective ages of your wife and children? Answer. 57 years 30 years & 28 years. To what sex do your children belong? Answer. Male and Female. Are not some of your children able to support you. Answer. They don’t do so both have Familys. In what business are you now engaged, if any, and what do you earn? Answer. no Business. Earn nothing have a stiff hand one finger off. What estate have you in your own right, real and personal, and what is its value? Answer: One Cow & calf 4 head of Hogs 5 sheep Value $50.00. What estate has your wife in her own right, real and personal, and what is its value? Answer. a small amount of House Hold and Kitchen furniture $25.00. How have you derived support for yourself and family for the last five years? Answer. I Sold my last Horse Beast and my wife hired out to work. Do you use intoxicants to any extent? Answer. I don’t. How long have you been an actual resident of the State of Tennessee? Answer. 70 years. Have you an attorney to look after this application? Answer. I have an agent. If so, give his name and address. I have treated Mr. Hurst for about three years more or less for chronic dysentery also had to take off one finger and open his hand and clean out from the effects of a wound caused by a rope tearing off the finger.
