Pension Application of Daniel Hurst, Son of William and Sarah Southern Hurst. Pension filed 26 May 1902-Pulaski Co. VA. His Statement: He was in Company F. Captain Brock 1st. Tenn. Cavalry. I was wounded December 1861 at Fishing Creek, KY. I was wounded while in the charge upon infantry. I was shot in the left side the ball coming out of the left side of my neck. I enlisted in the said Cavalry for 12 months. After my enlistment expired I was ordered to Knoxville at which place I re-enlisted for the remainder of the war. In company A 63 Tenn. Regiment(Abe Fulkerson Col. Infantry Services) I was slightly wounded in the head in 1863 in September at the battle of Chickamauga, Tenn. Capt. William Fulkerson. I was wounded again at Drury’s’s Bluff near Richmond on the 16th day of May 1864 while in charge of my company. I had been promoted to a Captain, but had not received my Commission. I was shot in the breast at Drury’s Bluff the ball passing through my left lung and coming out at the spinal Column. These wounds have totally disabled me from following my usual occupation or any occupation by which I can make a living. I am now in my 80th year. I have attached here to a certificate of a physician showing the nature of said wounds. After being shot at Drury’s Bluff I came to Pulaski County and was nursed by my aunt, Virginia Southern. After recovering from my wounds I went back to my Company and was captured at Hatchers Run seven miles below Petersburg in April 1865 and was taken to Point Lookout where I remained until July 1865. Newbern, Virginia May 17, 1902 I certify that upon examination of Daniel Hurst of Co. A. sixty third Tennessee Regt. Wm. Fulkerson Capt and Abraham Fulkerson Colonel. I find him permanently disabled in consequence of three wounds received in action during the late war. The first wound received at Fishing Creek, Kentucky about the last week in December 1861, the ball passing underneath the shoulder blade on the left side, ranging upward through the Lung and coming out just above the clavicle. The second wound was received at the battle of Chjicamunga, Tennessee in September 1863. The Ball producing a scalp wound overt the left parietal Protuberant. The third wound received a Drury’s Bluff , Virginia the 16th day of May 1864. The Ball entering the left edge of the Sternum about one inch below the left Steno Clavicle Articulation passing through the left Lung and making its exit at the Spinal Column about the middle of the Thorax. The two wounds received in the chest are permanent and will disable the applicant as a manual laborer as long as life shall last. James B. Hurst age 57 years whose post office address is Whitesburg, Tennessee. Was personally acquainted with Daniel Hurst who was a Confederate Soldier in William Fulkerson’s Co. A. and Col. Abe Fulkerson Regt. In the war of the Rebellion. We have known said soldier since the war well. Affiants father state said solder, Hurst was wounded in the actual service near Richmond, VA at Drey’s Bluff and was captured at Hatchers Run seven miles below Petersburg Virginia in April 1865. Sent to Point Lookout Prison, MD and then held until July 18, 1865 and then released. The ball entered his body near the pit of his stomach and came out near the backbone making him a bad cripple.
