CAPT. HURST IS A NO SHOW. COURT HOLDS HIM IN CONTEMPT.

Seeking information on John Hurst, resident of Green Co.,TN. He was a Lt. in the
Militia in Shenando Co.VA, and a Capt of Militia in Greene Co. He faithfully served
as a juror in 1798, but recently failed to appear for Jury Duty, when the Court met
for the July session here in Green Co. Anyone with information about Capt Hurst
is asked to contact the court bailiff. "We are praying he has not met with foul play..."

So might a newspaper headline read, based on the *records of the Greene Co., TN
Court, cited below. I too am seeking information on this same man 195 years later.
My ancestor, John Hurst and wife Mary and their families, were in Greene Co., TN
during this period. I am trying to identify this man to confirm or rule out this Capt Hurst,
and/or the mentioned John Hurst, Sr as being my ancestor, John Hurst, a revolutionary
patriot, of Shenandoah Co., VA and later Montgomery Co., VA, who resided in
Greene Co. for about 10 years, from before 1798 to no later than 1806. All my life
I have heard the older members of the family call him :Capt." John Hurst. Is this the
reason? The dates are during the above time frame, and the fact that, in July of
1806, John Hurst did not show up for jury duty, would fit the departure time
frame... for he may have been well on his way across KY by July of 1806.

1798 John Hurst is shown to be called to jury duty.
July 1805 John and Ezekial Hurst wittnessed a will.
July 1806 session John Hurst is held in contempt because he did not show up for court to
      serve on jury duty.

***************

Here is an estimated time frame for my John Hurst, Sr of Shenandoah and
Montgomery Counties in VA, based on many years of research. The resources
are cited at the end.

1) John and Mary Hurst begin selling off pieces of land in Montgomery Co., VA in
April of 1794. The last piece appears to have been sold in 1797.

2) John and Mary Hurst were in Green Co., TN by 1798, when son, Elijah, married
Mary Lindsay and remained at least until 12 July 1804, when daughter, Elizabeth
married Levi Dunn there.

3) According to family tradition, John and Mary Hurst and their families, remained in
Green Co., TN only about 10 years. Tradition also says that they took less than a
year to cross KY and we know they were in KY by October 26, 1806, when
grandson, John L. Hurst was born, which narrows the departure to an estimated
date of 1804-1806.

4) Records show John Hurst purchased 7 pieces of land in Harrison Co., Indiana
Territory in 1807 from the newly opened Jeffersonville (IN) Land Office.

9)1806 - 7 entrys for land in Harrison County, Jackson Twp., at the Jeffersonville
Land office, Indiana Territory by John Hurst. [This was the earliest date that it was
legal to purchase land in what had been Indian territory earlier. His were some
of the earliest land purchases registered after the opening of the Land office at
Jeffersonville, IN. The story handed down in the family tradition, was that he
purchased a quarter section of land for each of his sons to encourage them to
settle nearby. He had 6 sons, and that would leave one for himself or one or
more of the daughters. The area was to become known as Hursttown, and a
small area of it still known by that name today. Old John Hurst and numerous
members of his family are buried in the Hursttown Cemetery, on the banks of
Big Indian Creek, about 5 miles north of Corydon, Harrison Co., IN]
